There are many multi-storey and underground car parks across the UK, many of which were built as far back as the 1940’s. The car parks were often built within city centres and were constructed quickly to accommodate growing businesses within our towns and cities.
Poor build quality, and inadequate maintenance lead to deterioration of the concrete frame and decks. Reinforcement corrosion due to ingress of chlorides within highways de-icing salts are typically carried on the wheel arches of parked vehicles. The chloride solution quickly deteriorates uncoated concrete slabs leading to corrosion of the embedded steel reinforcement.
Other concrete deterioration mechanisms include carbonation, water penetration and chemical attack from vehicle fluids.
